Calculate court deadlines

Turn a trigger date into every dependent deadline, add them to the matter calendar, and keep the firm's rule sets current.

  1. Open the calculator

Go to Calendar and select Deadline calculator, or open a matter, select More actions and then Calculate court deadlines. The first time, LawMOR installs two starter rule sets: Federal district court (FRCP) and California Superior Court (CCP).

  2. Describe what happened

Choose the Rule set, then What happened (for example Service of complaint or Hearing date), the date, and how the paper was served. Service by mail or overnight delivery adds the extra days the rule set allows. Choose the Matter if you want to add the dates to its calendar.

  3. Compute and read the result

Select Compute. Each row shows the deadline, the due date, the number of days counted (calendar or court days) and how the date was worked out: the base period, any extra time for service, and whether it moved off a weekend or holiday. The citation column shows the rule it came from.

  4. Add the deadlines to the calendar

Select Add to calendar. Each deadline becomes a calendar event on the matter at 5 pm on the due date, named after its rule and the matter number. LawMOR keeps a record of the computation so you can see later how a date was reached.

  5. Review the rule sets

Starter rule sets are marked unverified and the calculator shows a warning until an owner or attorney has checked every rule against the current rules of court. Go to Settings, then Deadline rules, open a set, correct anything that has changed, and tick Verified. You can add your own rule sets for local rules.
