Make and take calls in LawMOR

Set up the firm's SIP servers and lines, call clients from a matter or a contact, answer firm calls in the browser, and choose the matter each call files to.

  1. Get an extension

The phone button sits in the top bar, next to the bell. If it says Not set up, a firm owner gives you a line under Settings, Phone and texting, Softphone: they pick you, the SIP server, your extension and SIP password from the phone system, and the number your calls show as caller ID. The phone stays connected while you move around LawMOR, and disconnects when you sign out or close the tab.

  2. Which phone systems work (owners)

Browsers can only speak SIP over secure WebSocket (wss://, RFC 7118) with encrypted DTLS-SRTP audio. These work directly: FusionPBX and FreeSWITCH (WSS on port 7443, path /), Asterisk and FreePBX (PJSIP transport-wss with webrtc=yes, port 8089, path /ws), and Kamailio or OpenSIPS (their WebSocket module, usually port 443 or 8443). A plain SIP trunk or hosted provider that only accepts UDP, TCP or TLS cannot be reached from a browser: put a WSS-capable PBX or gateway in front of it and add that here. Without a server of your own, lines use the CallMOR default, shown read-only so you can see every value in effect.

  3. Add a SIP server (owners)

Under SIP servers select Add SIP server. In Server: give it a Name; pick the Type of server, which fills in the usual port and path; enter the Server address (pbx.example.com:7443 is enough, LawMOR saves it as wss://host:port/path); and the SIP domain, the part after @ in each SIP address. In Registration: keep Register lines on to receive calls, and set how often to renew. Registrar, Realm and Outbound proxy are only needed when your provider gives them to you: a different address for REGISTER, a different authentication realm, or a proxy every request must pass through.

  4. Audio, network and dialing (owners)

In Audio and keypad, tick the codecs to offer and use Move up to set the order (Opus sounds best; keep G.711 for carriers), choose how Keypad tones are sent (RFC 4733 unless menus ignore key presses, then SIP INFO), and how long an unanswered call rings. In Network, STUN and TURN help audio through firewalls: leave them blank to use CallMOR's, or enter your provider's TURN servers with its user name and password, which LawMOR stores encrypted. Raise Network wait if calls connect without audio. In Dialing, choose the Number format your outbound routes expect, an Outside-line prefix such as 9 if your PBX needs one, and the Default country for numbers typed without a + code. Advanced holds the matter-number header, session timers, extra headers your provider asks for, and the user agent name.

  5. Add a line and test it (owners)

Under Lines select Add a line. Pick the Person and the SIP server, enter the Extension, the SIP user name (usually the extension), the Authorization user name only if your provider signs in with a different one, the SIP password and, if you like, the Display name the person you call sees. The resulting SIP address is shown so you can compare it with the phone system. Select Test connection on the line: LawMOR asks you to confirm your second factor, then your browser connects and registers once with that line and tells you plainly what happened, for example connected and registered, WebSocket refused, wrong user name or password (SIP 401 or 403), user not found on that domain (404) or no reply (408). Everyone can test their own line under Your line.

  6. Allow the microphone

The first time you call or answer, the browser asks to use your microphone; select Allow. Under Settings, Phone and texting, select Test microphone and speak: the bar moves when LawMOR hears you. In the phone panel, Audio settings and alerts lets you pick the microphone and, in browsers that support it, the speaker or headset.

  7. Call from a matter or a contact

On a matter, select Call client next to Text client. LawMOR dials the client's first phone number and files the call to that matter. On a contact, select Call next to any phone number. In Triage, Call back uses the softphone too. Without an extension these links use your computer's or mobile's phone app instead.

  8. Dial a number yourself

Select the phone button. Type a number or an extension, or start typing a contact's name and pick them from the list, or use the dial pad. Select Call. A US number can be typed in any common format.

  9. Use the call controls

During a call the panel shows the time on the call and the buttons Mute, Hold, Keypad and Transfer. Keypad sends key presses to menus and voicemail systems. Transfer hands the call to another number or extension straight away (a blind transfer). Hang up ends the call. The top bar keeps showing the call time if you close the panel.

  10. Answer an incoming call

When a firm call rings you, LawMOR plays a ring and opens the panel with the caller's name and their open matters when the number belongs to a contact. Select Answer or Decline. To be alerted while LawMOR is in a background tab, open Audio settings and alerts and select Show desktop alerts for incoming calls, then allow notifications.

  11. Choose the matter for the call

During or after the call, select one of the caller's open matters, or pick another under Another matter, and select File call to this matter. When the phone system's call record arrives, the call is filed there and a private draft is written from the call's measured length. If you do not choose, LawMOR matches the call as usual or sends it to Triage.
